The Delaware County Chapter of the American Red Cross regularly responds to emergencies throughout Delaware County. Most people think of hurricanes and floods when they think of disasters but our most common disaster is actually home fires. During FY 07, our all-volunteer Disaster Action Team responded to 30 home or apartment fires. Our 60+ trained volunteers stand ready day or night to respond immediately upon notification and help meet essential needs. Typical services offered may include: financial assistance for food, clothing, lost medication, shelter and mental health counseling. This vital assistance is provided entirely free of charge and made possible only because of generous financial donations from the community. We also provide information on other community services available to our clients.

In addition to responding to local home fires, the Delaware County Chapter constantly works to be prepared for much larger local disasters such as floods, severe weather and hazardous material spills. Under the Delaware County Emergency Operations Plan, it is the responsibility of the American Red Cross to provide food, shelter and financial assistance to local victims of disaster. This mission is supported by a supply of necessary equipment, regular volunteer training and drills/exercises.

When large natural or man-made disasters occur in other areas of America, we also have the ability to send members of our local team to help with the relief efforts. If you are interested in learning more about becoming a local and/or national disaster volunteer, contact Director of Emergency Services, Kelli Kincaid.
